Flight discovery: questions & answers
From choosing an airport to comparing baggage: practical answers for planning your flight.
What is TakeoffAtlas and how does flight discovery work?
TakeoffAtlas starts with your departure airport rather than a fixed destination. Choose a place such as Dubai, Hurghada or Berlin to open an interactive map of observed flight prices. Explore the destinations available in the map, then start a specific search through FlyFinder.
Do I need to know where I want to go?
No. You only need a departure airport. The map is designed to help you discover places, compare regions and find travel ideas you may not have considered before.
Can I search by city instead of airport code?
Yes. Enter an airport name, a city or a three-letter IATA code. If several airports serve the same city, select the correct one explicitly rather than assuming that a city name refers to just one airport.
What if a city has several airports?
The airport search can present the relevant airports and their IATA codes for you to choose from. Selecting the right airport is important for fare comparisons and travel planning. Check the airport shown on your booking before purchasing.
Which airports are supported?
TakeoffAtlas uses a growing international airport directory. A listed airport does not guarantee that the price map currently has offers from that location. Visible destinations depend on the observations available to the map provider.
Does the map show every possible destination?
No. The widget shows destinations for which its provider has suitable price observations. It is not a complete flight timetable or a catalogue of every airline. A destination absent from the map may still appear in a separate FlyFinder search.
How can I see nonstop flights only?
Use the direct-flight option on the airport page to narrow the available results, or switch it off to allow connections. Smaller airports may show very few price markers when this filter is active. Always check the actual itinerary before booking.
How do I find the cheapest destination from my airport?
Price markers are a quick way to spot comparatively inexpensive destinations in the available dataset. They may refer to different travel dates and fare conditions. Compare dates, trip type, baggage and final price before deciding.
Are prices on the map guaranteed?
No. They are observed prices that can change with availability, demand and fare rules. The subsequent search and the ticket provider determine which offers are still available for your requested dates.
Why can FlyFinder show a different price?
The price map and the following flight search may draw on data collected at different times. Baggage allowances, payment methods and fare details can also affect the final amount. Compare the actual itinerary and inclusions before choosing an offer.
Can I compare one-way and return tickets?
Depending on the widget settings, the map may support one-way and return-trip offers. Always compare fares of the same trip type. The price of a one-way ticket cannot be treated as the price of a full return journey.
Can I use TakeoffAtlas for a trip months from now?
Yes. You can explore possible destinations now and check particular travel dates later. Observed prices are snapshots rather than long-term promises, so perform another search before booking.
Is checked baggage included in the map price?
Not necessarily. Some low fares include only a limited hand-baggage allowance, while checked bags may cost extra. Review the baggage rules and optional extras in the search results and with the final provider.
How do I turn an idea into a booking?
Choose a destination on the map and open the FlyFinder flight search. Compare the flights and fares offered for your dates, then complete the booking with your selected provider. Keep that provider’s name and contact details with your confirmation for any later questions.
Do I need an account to use the map?
No TakeoffAtlas account is required for airport search or map discovery. Once you visit a third-party booking website, that provider may request traveller information and apply its own privacy and booking terms.
Is TakeoffAtlas free to use?
Yes. Airport search, travel inspiration and the map after consent are free to use. We may earn commission through labelled partner offers. Your booking is completed with the provider you select, under the conditions displayed there.
Why do I need to allow the external map to load?
The map is provided by Travelpayouts and loading it can connect your browser to external servers. You can decide whether to activate that external content. Our own airport information and search pages remain accessible without it.
What can I do if the map is empty?
First check whether you allowed the external widget and whether a content blocker is preventing it from loading. Some airports have very few price observations. Try toggling the nonstop filter, or use the direct FlyFinder search.
Can I use TakeoffAtlas on a phone?
Yes. Our website and airport search are designed for phones, tablets and desktop computers. The embedded map belongs to an external provider, so its appearance on smaller screens must be tested separately. A direct flight search remains available.
Which languages are available?
TakeoffAtlas is available in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Turkish. The language menu also links to the equivalent airport page. The selected map language is passed to the provider; some airline and ticket-provider names or descriptions may appear in another language.
How can I compare two departure airports fairly?
Use the same dates, journey type and fare requirements. Add rail or fuel costs, parking and any necessary overnight stay. A more distant airport can offer a lower ticket price without being the better choice for the whole trip. Include the journey home after your return flight.
Does last minute automatically mean a cheap flight?
Last minute describes a short time before departure, rather than a guaranteed saving. Value depends on the actual offer, availability and your dates. For spontaneous travel, set a total budget first and check accommodation and ground transport as well as the flight.
How should I plan a short city break?
Compare the usable time at your destination. A low fare is less attractive if you arrive late and leave early. Consider transport from the arrival airport to the city and back to the terminal. A flight without a connection can be especially practical for a short stay.
What matters when travelling as a group?
Enter the full party of adults, children and infants in the flight search. Compare the total amount and included services. A single fare idea on the map does not confirm that the same fare level or adjoining seats are available for everyone travelling.
Could a different arrival airport be a better choice?
Yes, if the flight schedule, ground transport and accommodation location work together. Check the exact airport code and the journey to your actual destination. A lower fare to a distant airport may be less attractive after transfer costs and travelling time are included.
What should I check for a self-arranged connection?
Read whether you are buying a through booking or separate tickets. Separate bookings may require baggage collection, another check-in and another security check. Allow sufficient time and review the conditions that apply if a flight is delayed. Include any airport change in your plan.
How do I identify the right airport for a large city?
Match the three-letter IATA code in the search, results and booking summary. DXB and DWC, for example, are different airports in the Dubai area. The city name alone does not identify your terminal, ground transport or transfer arrangements.
Can I use the map without sharing my location?
Yes. You choose the departure airport yourself, so TakeoffAtlas does not need browser GPS permission. The external map has a separate consent choice and receives technical connection data when loaded. Read the information beside the map and in our privacy notice.
How can I change or withdraw map consent?
Open “Change map consent” in the footer. Allow the map or continue using the website without it. Withdrawing consent reloads the page to remove a map that is already running. Your choice is stored locally in this browser for up to 90 days.
Can I share an airport page?
Yes. The footer offers WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, X and email links, plus a copy-link button. They share the address of the current information page. Social media widgets are not embedded during an ordinary page visit; a connection starts when you open the corresponding link.
Who should I contact about an existing booking?
Your booking confirmation names the airline or ticket provider you purchased from. That company handles payment, changes and refunds. For questions about the TakeoffAtlas website or corrections to airport data, use our contact page.
Where does the airport information come from?
Airport facts come from the public OurAirports dataset. Our import selects airports with reported scheduled services and a valid IATA code, and validates the fields. Featured airport profiles link additional sources. Check current terminal assignments, schedules and individual flights with the airport or airline.
